The Advantages of Rattan as an Alternative Material for Elementary School Furniture

The physical structure of rattan elementary school furniture has attractive characteristic because rattan is lightweight, durable and flexible. This encourage efficient learning activities for students from grade 1 to 6. Understanding and selecting the right materials with the right design will not only create new meaning but also prompting positive social, environmental, as well as economic. Rattan has been used for furniture because it is lightweight, durable, flexible and attractive. Blessed with resources that allow a broad range of material options, designers based in Indonesia have the privilege to further explore or develop a local material. And skilled of craftsmanship help to create the framework strong and timeless furniture that can be inherited for several generation. This study aims to analyze the advantage of characteristics rattan furniture design as a local material for active learning activities in elementary school. This study conducted rattan material experiments by making various type of elementary school chairs based on recommendation from past research which would be compared with the original chairs commonly used in public elementary school in Indonesia. The physical structure of rattan elementary school furniture has attractive characteristic to facilitate the production aspect of this furniture itself to encourage efficient learning activities.
